500 Words About India

The population of India is the second largest in the world next to China. India's population is 1,173,108,018 while China’s population is 1,330,141,295.  Because of India’s huge population HIV/AIDS is a huge problem. 310,000 people die of it each year! That is the second highest number of deaths from HIV in the world. 2.4 million People have HIV in India. Life there is much different than it is here, the huge population also causes problems in the environment. India has a big problem with deforestation, soil erosion, overgrazing, desertification, air pollution from industrial effluents and vehicle emissions, water pollution from raw sewage and runoff of agricultural pesticides, etc. 55 percent of the population lives in slums and 25 percent of the country is under the poverty line .
It is an everyday battle to survive for the 7 million people who live in the slums of  India and especially Mumbai. They go out on the streets searching for big metal pieces for a roof to their handmade houses. If you think that is harsh kids as young as new born witness their parents and friends get killed in the riots and they have to find a way to take care of them selves at a very young age. The riots of Mumbai started because the Hindu thought Muslims kidnapped some of the Hindu children. All together there was a total of six riots and the Hindu’s also destroyed the secrete Muslim Masque. The damage of these riots was so great it cost 3.6 million dollars to fix Mumbai. Kids turn into beggars, trying to get the littlest amount of money to eat.  Some kids work for people that make them go out on the streets and sing for money. In the movie “Slumdog Millionaire” kids are tricked in to working for these people that make them sing for money and the bosses hurt them to make the people feel sorry for the kids by pouring hot oil into their eye and making them blind.
Sexual trafficking is when people get tricked into having a better job some were else but actually they are being moved to be rapped and made into prostitutes. For women in India annually 3 million are tricked into trafficking each year and the saddest part is 40 % of these girls are minors. India is the second most watched country for trafficking.  There are more than 250,000 Nepalese girls and women in Indian brothels (A brothel is a house of prostitution.) Some other ways girls get into the Indian brothels are their parent’s sell them to make money or they are tricked into fake marriages. Children are also trafficked and sold to circus’s to make labor. Sex trafficking is not the only kind of trafficking. There are many other types as well like: forced labor, commercial gay and lesbian relationships, to hire wombs, domestic slavery, organ transplantation and begging also.
Learning about life in India makes me feel very greatful that I live where i do

Coffee

Coffee prices are not nearly as cheap as they were in the past years. Global Exchange says prices used to be as low as 60 cents per pound.  Prices today in popular stores like Starbucks are $6.28 a pound for an eight o'clock coffee. Duncan Donuts is surprisingly even more expensive than Starbucks. One bag of coffee beans is eight dollars and for four bags twenty dollars. At least some places are still keeping the prices cheap. McDonald's coffee goes for only $1.40. Even though a lot of places are raising their prices McDonald's is keeping cheap good quality coffee.

Civil War Summary
This war starts all the way back in 1983 and has kicked out more than 4 million southerns leaving them nothing. The southerns migrated to Juba, Ethiopia, Kenya an Egypt. The war started because of the religious differences between Arabs and black Christians. It was so bad the Arabs would just kill the Christians for no reason just like Hitler! You were killed if you where 15 or older so they kids wouldn't have anyone to take care of them. Girls and Boys of ages 11-13 would take care of the little kids and would start a family. The war ended in 2005.

I can't do the last part because i was not here for the rest of the movie.

Lost Boy's of Sudan

Why did the lost buys have to run away from there homes?

They had to run away from their homes because of war in their village. If you weren't a certain religion you were killed. They got kicked out of their homes.

Why couldn't they stay in Ethiopia?

They couldn't stay in Ethiopia because living there was hard. They didn't have any water or food. Witch was much different then their life in Sadan were they lived on the Nile river. It supplied them with water to drink and made it easier to grow crops and raise cattle.

What was life like in Refugee camps?

Life in camps is very hard. They have little to no food have to drink out of mud and sometimes even their own urine. Many want to cry but no tears come out because they are so dehydrated. Also, many of them are injured but haave no medical help.

In Geography today some people shared their stories about there familes past. Some peoples were really interesting like Elina has a castle in spain and Clarkes ansestor got kicked out of France! We also made a road map to were are familes started to how we got to Maryland when we were all done we just looked up houses on google earth.

Sunday, October 17, 2010

Family history

While both of my parents have lived in Maryland their whole lives, their parents and grandparents have come from all over. Starting with my dad’s side, My Gammy lived in Ohio. Her parents got divorced when she was six. Gammy lived with her dad till she was 14. Her and her sister decided they didn’t want to live with their dad anymore so they moved in with their mom in Maryland. My great grand mom Alice Harrison was born and raised in Ireland. She moved to America for freedom of religion. Alice was a Mormon but wasn’t allowed to practice that faith in Ireland. When she married Lloyd Cleary she changed to a Catholic. After Alice divorced Lloyd she moved to Maryland to be with her family. Just like Alice, Lloyd’s family grew up in Ireland. The only thing different is Lloyd’s family migrated to America before he was born. They migrated for job opportunities and a new life. Lloyd lived his whole life in Ohio. Next, my grandpa’s grandfather was born in Germany. At the time they migrated to America because of job opportunities. They decided they would be better off if they migrated to America. He made his living as a farmer. Today my family still celebrates German traditions. We have Christmas at my grandparents every year and have a German dinner.
On my mom’s side of the family my grandpa Doc doesn’t know much about his ancestors. The only thing he knows is, he was born in Maryland and he is Irish and German. My grandpa’s wife grandma Janet has also lived in Maryland her whole life. (Her and my grandfather have been together since the sixth grade)! Janet’s grandparents moved to America from Poland because they wanted to start their lives over in the United States.

Where i'll be 18 years from now

Eighteen years from now when I'm all grown up and living on my own I think it would be cool to live in either Italy or Australia. One reason I would like to live in Italy is because they have a an amazing soccer team. Soccer is my favorite sport, even if I wasn't able to play i would still enjoy watching a game in one of their huge soccer arenas. One pull factor for moving to Italy is they have an unemployment rate of 7.7%. It's not the best in the world, but it’s better than the USA's. Another reason I want to move to Italy is the beautiful and historical land marks like the leaning tower of Pizza, and the ruins of Rome. Every day you would have a beautiful place to see and visit. It is also close enough that you could visit other very interesting places like France and Germany. Even though Italy is an amazing and beautiful place there are some downsides of living there. For example a push factor would be Italy has a very high crime rate. Pick-pocketing, purse snatching and theft from parked cars is a serious problem in Italy. When people go to the ATM they have to cover the number pad when they type in there pin so no one will steal there pin number. I would want to feel safe where I live this this would be a big push factor.
Australia is always warm and has beautiful beaches. I love beaches and warm weather. I also really like Australian accents so they wouldn’t get annoying like if I lived in China and couldn’t understand anything. A pull factor to live in Australia would be the warm weather and gorgeous beaches. During Christmas you could still go out on the beach! It also has a very good unemployment rate of 5.9%! The economy is also 15 largest in the world which isn’t as great as the United States but is still very good. A push factor of moving there is they have some of the biggest sharks in the world. Even though they have beautiful beaches I would be afraid of getting attacked. Finally another push factor is they are run by a constitutional monarchy. I don’t like the fact that I do not have complete say on how my country is run.

Homework-Did you know?

Did you know it only took facebook 2 years to get 50,000,000 users when it took the radio 38 years to reach that much! This shows me that technology keeps getting better and better as the years go on and by the time i have kids you'll never know what they'll have or how fast everyone will be able to use one. I also think that fact is pretty cool because everyone i know uses facebook but i had no idea that many people used facebook. Next, there are 540,000 words in the english language thats 5 times more then Shakespeer had in his time. I think this is  very interesting fact becasue common words were used to hearing like car, computer, bagel bites ect. the people in his time would not even know what those things are.
